Blue Structuring Utopia
This exhibition at ArtEZ in February 2012 consisted of a collaboration between myself and five fellow students. Based on the red thread in our work, which was “the city”, and especially the structures of the city that form the main living environment of human beings, while at the same time, seem to stand in the way of human contact. Our aim was to showcase the tension between our need for, and at the same time aversion against, structure in this exhibition. For my part I created a site-specific work that responded to the whole exhibition, all the work in the exhibition, the exhibition concept and the space in which the exhibition is set up. I also put a quote from George Orwell positioned on the right wall, which underlines the underlying idea of the impossibility of human beings to create a Utopian living space for themselves. Deze tentoonstelling bij ArtEZ bestond uit een samenwerking tussen mijzelf en vijf medestudenten. Op basis van ons werk vonden we de rode draad van de stad, en dan voornamelijk de structuren die de stad, de voornaamste leefwereld van de mens, vormen, en tegelijkertijd het contact in de weg staan. Het wringende tussen de behoefte aan structuur en tegelijkertijd onze afkeer ertegen hebben we in deze tentoonstelling neer willen zetten. Mijn aandeel was om een site specific werk te maken dat reageerde op de gehele tentoonstelling, al het werk in de tentoonstelling, het tentoonstellingsconcept en de ruimte waarin de tentoonstelling opgezet is. Daarnaast heb ik een citaat van George Orwell op de rechtermuur geplaatst, die de onderliggende gedachte van de onmogelijkheid om een Utopische leefruimte voor de mens te creëren onderstreept.
