‘Fury’ & ‘Conny’s Lines’

The site specific installation ‘Fury’ (2016) and the five woodcuts titled respectively ‘Conny’s lines 1 – 5’ (2016) were created for last summer’s duo exhibition ‘Partners in Crime – Artists in Prime‘ of myself and Cornelius Grau at Gallery Luis Leu in Karlsruhe, Germany. During the course of approximately one week, both artists – who work very differently, using very different materials, making processes and formal language – reacted on one another’s work in the follwoing way: I first worked on creating the site specific, rubber (and smelling of it!) installation ‘Fury’ while Cornelius Grau installed his small sculpture pieces. Then, I reacted on his sculpture pieces by making abstracted interpretations of these in woodcuts, which were then placed on the wall above the sculptures. Meanwhile, Cornelius Grau reacted to ‘Fury’ by building a similar structure, but from coloured wood pieces. This way, we copied one another’s work, using our own formal language and own chosen preferred materials. It was an interesting process and experience, to delve into one another’s work this way, so to speak, but choosing our own means of expression resulted in a fruitful threading into new pastures for both artists.
